Case Studies
Raju Patel, age 13, was born in a village in Western Nepal and came to the brick factory without any adults accompanying him. Here, he is lookingafter donkeys carrying bricks; he earnsless than $20 per month. Rajuis suffering from Nystagmus, and because of that he could not see well in midday and was not able to work properly. He was taken to Nepal Eye Hospital by a health worker of CDO and provided with special eye glasses, as prescribed by the doctor. These glassesnow have improved his vision and enable him to do his work.
People living and working at brick factories are exposed to the brick dust during much of the day. This frequently leads to eye irritations, and therefore, CDO has set up the program Eye Camp, in which free eye examinations are offered to brick factory workers and their families once a year. An eye camp takes place in a tent which is set up on the premises of a brick factory. For the day of an eye camp, a team of professional eye specialists is hired who perform a vision test (using a chart adapted for illiterate people) and an inner eye examination conducted by an eye doctor using an ophthalmoscope.
Another specialist fits the lenses to improve vision, and – in case of need – free eye glasses are handed to the people. For the treatment of eye irritations, appropriate medications prescribed by the doctor are given out free of charge to the patients. Follow-up counselling, if necessary, is done by CDO health workers. Should the eye examinations reveal a more serious disease, the patients are referred to the eye hospital for further testing or for surgery (e.g. in the case of cataracts). The costs of surgery are covered by CDO.
