Mobile Health Project

The villages targeted by CDO are situated in areas that are difficult to reach by vehicle.  Thus, the villagers don’t have easy access to health care.  In CDO’s Mobile Health Project, health examinations, health education, and health training are offered on site to the people.  Furthermore, the training of local village health workers assures that the population will have competent contact persons in the case of need.

1. On-site medical checkups with supply of medication as needed
   In this program, physicians offer health examinations and counseling to the patients.  In case of need, they prescribe appropriate medications which can be obtained on site and free of charge from the health workers of CDO.Seriously illpersons are referred to the hospital, where they are accompanied by CDO who also pays for the expenditures.
   
   Free eye examinations are offered during Eye Camp:  For that event, a team of professional eye specialists is hired  who perform a vision test and an inner eye examination conducted by an eye doctor using an ophthalmoscope.  Another specialist fits the lenses to improve vision, and – in case of need – free eye glasses are handed to the people.  For the treatment of eye irritations, appropriate medications prescribed by the doctor are given to the patients.  Should the eye examinations reveal a more serious disease, the patients are referred to the eye hospital for further testing or for surgery (e.g. in the case of cataracts).  The costs of surgery are covered by CDO.
2. Health education
   The goal of health education is to raise awareness in matters of health, personal hygiene,sanitation and safe drinking water.  Video films on the respective topics are shown on site, using electronic equipment that has been brought along for the event. Adolescent girls represent a special target group for health education.  They are given information on the hormonal changes that occur during puberty and are instructed in proper measures of personal hygiene.
3. Health training 
   A special focus of this program concerns first aid training.  A nurse, together with a health worker of CDO, explains and demonstrates in detail various first aid measures.  At the end of the training, a first aid box is given to each village health worker. Health training also includes the teaching of the techniques of proper hand washing and solar water disinfection(SODIS).
