Ashmita Shrestha, now age 13, lost her mother when her youngest sister was less than three weeks old.She lives together with her father, her brother and her two younger sisters. Her father,MithuShrestha, makes brick for six months of the year, and for the other six months hetries to eke out an income with odd jobs. Ashmita helps her father making bricks and cooking food, and she washes the clothes of the family after her school hours.MithuShrestha:"CDO is providing the stationeries and school fees for my four children. I thank them from my inner heart. If they didn’t get this opportunity, I think my children would be in the street. CDO helps me to bring a smile back on my children’s face."
At CDO, we believe that education should be every child’s right. Education equips children with knowledge and skill needed to realize their potential and is an integral part of human development.
With this in mind, CDO set up its Children Development Program (CDP) for the children of the brick factory workers. “CDP-School” is not a formal school, thus, for those children who show potential to succeed in a formal setting (i.e. a government school), CDO provides scholarships to local community schools. School and exam fees are paid, and the children are provided with school materials, bag and school uniform. In addition to academic support, the children are also offered regular medical care, health education and health training. CDO monitors the performance of its scholarship students and consults with their teachers as well as their parents on a regular basis. This type of counseling is very important for some children and their parents, because due to the poor economic circumstances, most of the parents are not able to devote time to their children.
